Hurricanes are a deadly force that can rip your house apart in no time. They can do incredible amounts of damage to your roof, leading to potential water damage and other more serious issues.
In this article, we have put together eight Top Tips for a Hurricane-Proof Roof, there are some simple steps that you should take in order to help your roof withstand the storm.
What are the best ways to make your roof hurricane-proof?
Choose the Slope and Shape of Your Roof Wisely
The shape and slope of your roof are important determining factors in how well your roof will fare against a hurricane. You’ll want to choose something that can withstand the extreme winds you’ll face during a hurricane. The slopes should allow the wind to go up and around the roof instead of prying the roof off.
Your roof should have at least four sloped edges to keep it hurricane-proof. However, the best hurricane-proof roof is hexagon or octagon-shaped; these can withstand the wind better than homes with only a few panels.
Consider the Material of Your Roof
The material your roof is made from is just as important as the shape of your roof. If your area is prone to strong windstorms and hurricanes, then you may want to consider metal roofing for your home.
Metal roofs are some of the best types of roofs for withstanding hurricanes. Their paneling is secure, and if installed properly, is almost entirely waterproof. They are also so secure that they are unlikely to be blown off by heavy winds.
Regular Maintenance for a Hurricane-Proof Roof
No matter how high quality your roof is, you should still take the time to perform regular maintenance measures to ensure it is structurally sound. You should call a professional at least once a year to perform maintenance. That way, if your roof has sustained any damage that you were unaware of, it can be taken care of before a hurricane or a storm hits.
You can do regular maintenance yourself by inspecting your roof after heavy storms as well. If you notice that your roof is damaged, call your local roofer right away.
Even with all of your prep work, there’s still a chance that your home could be at risk. Hurricane straps are a great way to secure your roof and your home’s foundation during a hurricane. There are various different types of hurricane straps that are installed in unique ways.
If you are considering installing hurricane straps on your home, it’s crucial that you talk to a professional before making the installation. They can guide you on what type of straps you should get and help you install them properly.
Inspect for Loose Shingles
Once you’ve given the underside of your roof an inspection, it’s time to get on top of the roof and look at the shingles. You’ll want to make sure that none of them are loose or damaged. The storm is likely to tear off any loose shingles, leaving your home unprotected and susceptible to damage. Therefore, inspecting for Loose Shingles is one of the most important top tips for a Hurricane-Proof Roof
Secure any loose shingles you find before the storm hits. That way, you’ll be less likely to experience damage.
If you are looking to replace the shingles on your roof, metal shingles are the best hurricane-proof roof shingles that you can look into. They are secure and can easily protect your home from water damage.
Study Your Insurance Policy
Unfortunately, you may be unable to prevent damage from a hurricane. You should thoroughly inspect your insurance policy to see what your coverage is. Some insurance policies don’t cover hurricane damage, so it’s crucial to look over your coverage before disaster strikes.
Our team strives to make the entire process as seamless and stress-free as possible. So, whenever you need professional support for roof damage or roof storm damage insurance claims, give us a call or book a Free Roofing Inspection.
Reinforce Your Roof to Make it a Hurricane-Proof Roof
For further protection, you can reinforce your roof from the inside. If you have an attic, you can inspect the underside of the roof for any holes or cracks. Try to determine if any spots seem fragile or damaged; these are the areas you’ll want to reinforce more heavily.
You should also inspect for mold or water damage. These areas are more likely to give way during a hurricane, which could lead to further damage during the storm.
Keep Your Yard Clean
While the condition of your roof is important, you should also keep your yard clean of anything that could cause damage. Make sure to trim any large branches from around your home; they could easily fall onto your roof and deal some serious damage.
If a storm is headed your way, you should also pick up any loose debris around your yard that could damage your roof. Even if your roof is fine on its own, any number of projectiles could damage it during the store.
Schedule an Inspection Before Hurricane Season
Once you’ve finished preparing your home and covered some, or all, of the Top tips for a Hurricane-Proof Roof, you should schedule an inspection with a professional. They can warn you about anything you missed and help you make important roof repairs before a storm takes your roof apart.
No matter how well you believe you’ve inspected your roof, you may still miss something. Roofers have a keen eye for detail and will be able to point out anything you missed so that your home won’t be at risk.
Protect Your Home following the Top Tips for a Hurricane-Proof Roof
Follow these top tips for a hurricane-proof roof and remember to give your roof a thorough inspection regularly to assess for damage. That way, you won’t be caught off guard if a storm hits. When in doubt, you should call a professional roofer for a second opinion.

Professional Gutter Installation is crucial to avoid problems and headaches down the road.
This was too good not to share with you.
Watch your gutter placement, watch your downspout placement!
This downspout dripping right onto the roof caused all this mess, all the way down to this gutter. When you’re getting your gutters done, make sure the gutter man knows what he’s doing. If he doesn’t call me, I know what I’m doing. We’re not going to drop the downspout onto the roof.
If it is all possible, we can drop this downspout into the next set of gutters, so the water doesn’t do all this damage.
As you can see here, It has leaked badly for a long time and all of the insides have probably all kinds of issues we gotta deal with now.
Y’all have a good weekend. Watch how your downspouts come down in your house.
Signs of hail damage can be very obvious, or very difficult to spot sometimes.
It takes a professional eye to recognize these signs on your roof. Commercial property owners are oftentimes surprised by how much damage comes from a brief storm.
Ignoring the damage can lead to more costs and a bigger headache for you down the road.
In this video, Matt will go over signs to help you discover any roof hail damage done to your commercial roof.
Hey guys this is Matt with Trinity Roofing and Restoration.
One of the easiest ways to tell if your property has sustained hail damage is by looking at the HVAC coils.
With all these coils here, you can see all the little dents and divots, that are tell-tale signs of hail damage. We can start looking at the rest of the membrane to see if he was dented, bruised spider, or otherwise broken from hail.
This looks like it’s pretty small hail, judging by the discoloration probably been here a while.
Maybe the roof has been replaced since this hail, and the unit hasn’t. But will start looking at that, noticing all the way around on the gutters, scuppers all the flashings as well.

Signs of Hail Damage on Your HVAC Unit.
But a big easy way to tell is by looking at your HVAC unit. So if your HVAC unit or, your HVAC tech ever says your unit needs to be re-coil because of hail. You probably need to have us out to look at the rest of the roof and make sure there are no more damaging effects on the roof itself.
This is another one of the items were going to look at while doing your commercial inspection on your TPO or modified membrane or any other kind of membrane on your commercial property will come out and take a look at that as well.

During a commercial roof inspection, debris on the floor is very common and can cause severe damage to your roof.
Hey guys Matt with Trinity Roofing and Restoration here.
One of the other items were going to check out on your commercial property it’s HVAC units and the other bigger penetrations.
A lot of times we find things that are leftover, pieces of wire, screws, whatever. We found a few things just walking around this unit.
All these screws probably went into this unit at one point in time. Someone just left it up here after they did some maintenance. So we pick it up to make sure no one is going to step on it, grind them into the TPO, and in this case modified membrane and start causing holes and leaks through the commercial roof.
Inspecting Your Commercial Roof for Debris
We walk around and get those things and we also check to make sure there are no water sources that are just going to consistently drip on your roof. All these pipes that should be connected and running out the drains and scuppers sometimes get loose.
As you can tell, most of the time they’re not glued, so we just got to figure out where they’re at, and this one just slides it back on here and hope that it stays.
Consistent Drip on roof
Debris on the floor
Commercial Roof Inspection
We would Just keep maintaining that each and every time we come up here for a maintenance routine.
We’re going to look for screws, fasters, anything else around here, or any debris on your commercial roof.
Also, make sure none of the modified membranes could become loose or punctured. We’re going to look at all your drip lines and make sure everything is tightened up and maintained the way it should be, so you’re not having consistent water dripping on your commercial roof.
Hi Everyone is Matt with Trinity Roofing and Restoration, talking again about parapet walls during an inspection.
It is not bad, but it’s kind of best practice to have that role come all the way up instead of creating additional seams if it’s not necessary. Sometimes, people will go all the way up on one roll and come down with the second roll. That could be what’s done here, we’re not sure and we’re not going to open it up to find out.
However, we’d like to see it continues as much as possible, so there are fewer seams on the route and fewer possibilities for leaks.
Again, we’ve got some rusted fasteners here, and you can see some of the sealant and caulking is starting to dry out.
Properly Sealing Parapet Walls on a Commercial Building
One of the biggest tell-tale signs that this is already leaking or has been leaking is all the mold and mildew growth on the wall. Generally, on a wall the water is going to rundown is not going to stay, but it’s consistently and constantly dripping from a faster that’s leaking or from a seal that’s leaking up here, you’re going to see this molding move in here.
So, all along this sidewalk here, we’ve been a lot of this mold and mildew on the wall, consistent with signs that this parapet wall is not sealed up properly.
Parapet Wall Roll
Parapet Wall Leaks
Parapet Wall Seams
If you guys have a wall that is not sealed up, maybe got some leaks coming in or your tenant or the rest of your building Give us a call, and have us come out and look at it. We provide Robust and reliable commercial roofing services.

Types of Parapet Walls
A parapet wall is an extension of the wall at the edge of a roof to form a barrier. Usually can be classified based on appearance. Some of those types are:
Commercial roofing parapet walls are barrier extensions of the wall at the edge of a roof, terrace, balcony, walkway, or other structure.
As a commercial building owner, you know that the roof of your building is an important part of its overall structure and appearance. Parapet walls are an integral part of commercial roofing systems, providing an extra layer of protection, and security. In this video, we’ll discuss the importance of parapet walls in commercial roofing systems and how they can help protect your building and its occupants.
Matt Dravis explains some of the things that will be inspected when performing an inspection of your commercial building. Regardless of the existing roof materials in your commercial building, our commercial roofing experts can identify problems and repair your roof in no time.
Hey guys, Matt with Trinity Roofing and Restoration here.
One of the first things we’re going to be checking on commercial roofing properties is the parapet walls, and the flashing on those walls.
Here, we’ve got some walls that are starting to separate. As you can see here, the fasters are tucked in all the way, and there is no sealant or rubber on this faster anymore, it’s already gone.
Also, the ceiling here is already started to fail on these connection points.
Parapet Walls Flashing
Parapet Walls fasteners
Parapet Wall Separation
Commercial Roofing Seams
You can tell by the discoloration that there has been a lot of standing water here. We have to ensure that the seams, and fasteners are properly sealed, leaving no possibility for water to penetrate through the walls.
That’s one of the first things we are looking at, the parapet walls. The seams on the metal, and the seams here going up the walls.
Whether your commercial building it’s modified or TPO or whatever else, we will check your walls all the way around your commercial property.
Hi everyone, Matt with Trinity Roofing Restoration here.
One of the other things we’re going to look at today is prior repairs.
If anybody else has been up on your roof doing other repairs, we want to make sure that they’re still in good order, and most importantly still working and functioning.
Commercial Roofing Repairs video.
Here It looks like probably some water is coming off this brick wall, probably getting in behind the membrane here and of the modified and going down into the tenant area below. It doesn’t look pretty but it has done its job.
What we are more concerned with is places where the modified is no longer sticky.
So, when we see that brings us cause for concern, therefore we’re going to look at it a little further.
We will see if there’s anything we need to do, and see if it needs to be touched up, see if maybe it’s come off up here, or maybe there’s water behind it.
A lot of the time on the rest of the roof, If it’s coming up, it’s sure signs of moisture penetration and we want to solve that issue.
We don’t have to be the first roofer on your roof, but will probably be the last. That way it’s done and resolved for you, and you’re not going to have to call anybody else.
But if you guys have prior commercial roof repairs that maybe aren’t working in, or the solution isn’t sticking then give us a call!
We’ll put it in our maintenance program and come out to take a look during our initial scope and figure out what’s going on for you.

Hi everyone Matt here with Trinity Roofing and Restoration.
One of the largest parts of our commercial roofing inspection is the roof, believe it or not.
There are a lot of facts and things we got to look at.
In this case, I’m standing right over a peek, or the structural part of the slope. This roof was built to shed to my left, and my right, and push water to discover an alpha off the roof.
So, here you can probably see it in the video where there’s like a white line where the water is driving to the left into the right. You can also see some of the seams here, so we’re looking at this roof in total.
What Are We Looking for in a Commercial Roof Inspection?
One, see if there’s hail damage and see if there’s wind damage, see if there are any storm-related openings or maybe animal-related openings that are causing any kind of leaks. We are going to look at that throughout the entire roof. We’re going to make sure that the water flows in the direction that the engineers and architects intended the water to flow, and is not sitting.
There’s not any structural settlement on that roof, that is causing the water to flow in a different direction than what was intended. We are going to look at these seams and make sure there’s not a whole lot of bleed-through, and that they’re not separating right.
Those seams are there because that’s where the product ended. But there should be enough overlap because there’s not going to be water penetration.
So, if we start seeing those seams lose their aggregate, lose their stickiness, and their ability to hold it on each other, especially during a windstorm, that’s not going to be good.
So we look at these seams, we see, you know what’s going on with them, do they need repairs? do they need some kind of coding? or is it just going to need a replacement?
We’re also going to look at the modified itself on this roof and see what it is like. You can see this. There’s a lot of alligatoring is what we call it. When it starts, the membrane itself starts to dry out. It starts to stretch out, and you can see it looks like alligator skin or dinosaur skin where you see all the little cracks infiltrating through the asphalt.
Signs of your Commercial Roof Needs Maintenance
So, once you start seeing that these signs on the roof need some kind of maintenance, maybe just needs coding, maybe these are former placement. We’re going to look at the whole thing.
This part, of the worst section on this roof. so it’s not terrible motion, it looks pretty good, but we do want to look at the seams, the overlaps, the asphalt itself, and obviously, we’re looking to see if there’s any kind of wind or hail or any kind of animals that may have infiltrated into the roofs.
So if you need to get someone to look at your entire property order a commercial roofing inspection and see what’s going on with it. Make sure there’s nothing wrong with it, or just give it a once over.

A commercial roofing walkthrough is an essential part of any roofing project. This process provides a detailed assessment of the roof to identify any potential problems or hazards that could lead to costly repairs or replacement. The walkthrough can also help ensure the roof is in good condition and will last for many years to come. By performing regular walkthroughs, you can spot small issues before they become major problems down the line.
During a commercial roofing walkthrough, a qualified roofer will inspect the entire roof, including flashing and other components, to determine its condition. The roofer contractor will then provide a detailed report outlining any problems that need to be addressed, along with recommendations on how to fix them.
In some cases, the walkthrough may also include a complete analysis of the roof design, which can help identify any weak spots that could lead to future problems.
A commercial roofing walkthrough is an invaluable tool for keeping your roof in top shape and extending its lifespan.
